GLOUCESTER - ROMAN GLEVUM

<
Gloucester is an ancient city. Nearly 2000 years ago the Romans established a fort there to guard the lowest crossing of the River Severn. This was Glevum, the setting for the 'Libertus' novels. Around Glevum were many other Roman sites - towns such as Corinium (now Cirencester) and opulent villas such as Witcombe, Chedworth and Cirencester. There are still many Roman remains to be seen in the area.

Gloucester itself still retains the basic road pattern which the Roman engineers laid down - Libertus could still find his way around !

And as a mosaicist, Libertus would be delighted to find mosaics which have survived in Gloucestershire; some are preserved in the museums; others remain on site, and are only occasionally uncovered for viewing.
